The Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area took center stage last week as NBC5 covered the hard work of students, staff and volunteers who are clearing out encroaching trees in an effort to restore prairie grasses, wildflowers and wildlife at the 2,600-acre nature preserve. Restoration manager Richard Freiheit is leading the project, funded through the summer by a $17,000 grant from the Anita Berry Martin Memorial Fund at the North Texas Community Foundation, UNT and Friends of LLELA. The students' work helps fulfill requirements for their environmental volunteerism graduation cords.
